LAWN TENNIS.

NOTES AND COMMENTS.

N.Z. DAVIS CUP TEAM.

Now that Australia . has definitely decided on its Davis Chip representatives, Messrs. Paterson, O'Hara Wood, Schlesinger, and Kalms, we naturally begin to enquire what is being done in regard to the New Zealand team, and who are likely to be entrusted with the task of upholding our prestige in the tennis world. J. Peacock, who will bo in England, is looked upon as a certainty, and has been entrusted with the captaincy and selection of the team. F. M. B. Fisher will be eligible, and probably will be included. J. N. Lowry. who «*s one of- the English University team to visit America last year, is leaving for New Zealand, so the chances of obtaining this player's services are negative. Should lie remain in the Dominion, he will, however, be a decided acquisition to New Zealand tennis, for, in addition to being a good player, he is described by one capable of judging, as " the best tvpe of sportsman one could wish to meet," McCarthy, who is in England, is the only other player mentioned so-far. With this combination only available, we should probably not make much headway and it seems a pity that some attempt was not made to include more of our players who are directly m touch with New Zealand tennis. The Isew Zealand Association, in this, has acted hastily, and it as felt that had the affiliated associations boen consulted m the matter, one or two of our promising younger players could possibly have been secured. There are other tennis players contemplating a trip to Britain, and with a little financial assistance, it might be possible to at times got awfully representative team together. What is required is the co-operation of the affiliated associations with the New Zealand bodv. North Shore Tournament. The Birkenhead and Northcotc Club intends holding its annual handicap tournament at the club's chip courts at fcortncote during Easter. Last year s fixture met with such success that the club decided to make the. tournament an annual one, and it will fill the requirements of those players who are in the city for the holidavs. An innovation is the inclusion of a junior championship for youtlis under 21 vears. . Entries closo with the secretary of the Birkenhead and Isorthcote Club on Saturday, April 12. It is probably not generally known that the Stanley Street courts are available for private matches between bouse or trade teams, or for hostesses wishing to entertain their friends. As there are facilities for supplying afternoon tea there a.good opportunity is available for this class of contest. . :.; The doings of members of teams that have visited New Zealand from Australia are naturally of interest, but especially so those of Miss Lance, who had such a triumphant march through New Zealand. That her trip improved her tennis beyond recognition is agreed upon by all the critics, and her performances in Australia this year resemble, by their measure of success, those in the Dominion while with the New South Wales ladies' team of 1921. She. has during the season won the doubles championship of Victoria, Australia and New South Wales, and all the championships of the same tournaments, with the exception of that of Victoria, when she was overcome by the heat, and was beaten by Miss St. George. This is the first time in th'e history of the game ■'. in Australia that a New South Wales lady has won all the championship events of both States. Father and Son and Veterans. Considerable interest is being aroused in the veterans, and the Father and Son allday tournament, to be played on Saturday, March 29, at Stanley Street. Family interest * is; being aroused and medical examination has been considered necessary in the casie of at least one ex-champion. The date for receiving entries has laeeri extended until Saturday next. So, far the following entries have been received:— Father and Son.—J. P. and B. Stevenson, J. If. and J. S. Robertson, J. B. and D. G. Macfarlane, A. N. and N. D. Bowden, A. S. £!. and A. J. Brown, J. and D. Macky, P. C. and F. C. Gould, A. A. and R. Martin, R. H. and R. J. Phelan, H. G. and H. O. Thomson, F. J. and E, Wilson, A. F. and R. D, Billing, R. and N. Angus, H. J. and F. C. Ellis. Veterans.— Pavitt, G. Mclnnes T. Macky, A. A. Martin, F. J. Burt,' R. Angus. These events are held annually in America with great success. As the schools tournament has been hindered by rain, it will be arranged, if possible, to play the final of the Dunlop Shield matches, which is between teams from the leading clubs on Davis Cud lines, on the same afternoon. This 'should provide a good afternoon's tennis, and attract a large attendance. A start was made with the schools' tournament last Saturday morning, a num- ■ ber of the girls' mate-he's being played at the Remuera courts. Stanley "Street* courts, where the boys' games were to bo played,' were too wet. The tournament will be continued to-morrow morning at Stanley Street for the boys and at Parnell Club's courts for the girls.
