Captain I*. H. Hatfield, marine superin« tendent for the Canadian Government Merchant Marine (Ltd. for Australia and Kew Zealand, is at present visiting Dunedip. He intends to leave for Australia this week. Captain Hatfield's head/ quarters/will be in Sydney.
Inspector J. J. Cassells, who has been an inspector of police at Christchurch for two v years, will shortly retire from that position., He ha* been in the police :' ;: force a good many years, and served in both the North and South Islands, Fat f ~ many years he was in the plain clothes branch, and as a detective did mnch ,hriU : /'•- Kant work in bringing notorious criminal to justice.
Mr. P. & Wal&e, chief clerk .of thfl Public Works Department, has been ap* pointed a member of the Main Highways Board in place of Mr. 6. 0. Godfrey, resigned. Mr. Waldie joined the Public Service in 1894, when he entered the -. Public Works Department. He -was transferred to Wellington in 1897. Ha was in the accountants' branch for 20 years, and Was then appointed \ inspecting officer for the department. In 1917 he • was appointed accountant of the department. Recently Mr. Waldie vacated thai post and took tip the position of chief ■ clerk in the department! . i '-". ;v ;
