NEW SCHOOLS IN BRICK

• EPSOM AND . NEWMARKET. AUTHORISATION OF GRANTS* ONEHUInGA infant DEPARTMENT After considerable delay, the Education Department has authorised grants for the ereotion in brick of new schools at Epsom and Newmarket and for a new infant department at Onehunga, notification of these grants; being received by the Auckland Education Board yesterday. Negotiations with " regard to the One--1 hunga school have been proceeding with the department for some time, the point at issue being the standard width of the corridors/ which.: under new regulations, j has been reduced from eight to six feet. J The department has notified the board ! that this regulation must be observed, 1 and the architect was accordingly , instructed to accept an amended tender of £9451 by Mr. C. W. Ravenhall. The work of erection will be jut in hand forthwith. Plans are to "be, prepared for the Epsom j and Newmarket schools, and tenders | will be invited as soon as this has been done. The Newmarket school" "will .. be erected on the site of the infant department, and the present site and buildings will be sold when the new building it completed.: / ■ A deputation from the Epsom School Committee waited on the board yesterday to urge the need for the erection of a temporary building to accommodate t&a pupils until the new school is completed. It was stated that the children were now suffering considerably .through having' to walk to the Agricultural Society's Grounds, and through being taught in a damp and unsuitable building. Although they did: not wish to press the matter, in view" of a grant for the new school "having been authorised, it, would be a good thing if temporary accommodation could be provided on fee Epsom school site. The architect, Mr. J. Farrell. reminded the deputation that' the Racing Club Building at Alexandra Park would be available for the children within a month or two, and this would be better than a temporary building. The work of erecting a new school would be started as soon as possible, and it would b# ready for occupancy at the opening of the 1925 term. The deputation agreed to leave the matter as it now stands.A grant for the erection of a newschool building at Waikino was also notified by the department.
