STATE FOREST AREAS.
The case put to the Prime Minister by the Wellington Forestry League is indubitably strong. So insignificant a percentage of permanent State forest as 2.4, with but an additional 2 per cent, of provisional State forest, makes imperative very vigorous measures to increase it. A policy of afforestation can achieve much; it is already achieving something. But the deputation's plea that bush-clad land adjacent to the State forest uplands should be purchased, in order to safeguard both those uplands and the lower areas, has great weight. Upon the maintenance of those upper forests very much depends. Their destruction or depletion means a reduced fertility for the lands beneath, as well as the loss directly suffered. Having due regard to the need for economy, it should still be possible to enlarge by purchase the State forest area. It would be economical in the long run to make some outlay now. To this matter the Forestry League, in Wellington and elsewhere, is fully justified in calling the attention of the public and the Government.
