FASHION-PLATE BURGLAR.
RECEIVERS DENOUNCED. LONDON, Mar. 11. Immaculately dressed, even to kid gloves, Convict Wells, who is known as "the Gentleman Burglar," and is now serving six years' imprisonment for 14 burglaries, gave evidence at the Old Bailey to-day. He was the chief witness against two men charged with receiving the proceeds of burglaries. Cross-examination elicited that on the expiry of a long sentence in 1914 he enlisted, and fought four years in the war, but afterwards was immediately imprisoned for new crimes. Wells said he always made a full statement of his exploits to the police with the sole object of the restoration of stolen property to its owners; hut the invariable result was a heavy sentence. He was forced.to give his present evidence against his will, and declined to accept a remission of his sentence as a reward.
