SOLDIER SETTLERS' RATES. COMPLAINT OF NON-PAYMENT The Manukau County council met yesterday, the chairman, Mr. F. M. Waters, presiding. There were also present Messrs. C. Grainger, C. F. Kearsley, T. Speechlay, J. Da vies, amd G. H. Morrison. A letter was received from the Bay of Islands County Council asking for an Indication of the council's attitude in regard to the failure of soldier settlers to pay their rates. It was resolved to support the Bay of Islands Council in bring- | ing the matter under the notice of the Government, emphasising the injustice I which the delinquency inflicted upon — e ratepayers of the county. A complaint was received from the Health Department regarding the insanitary condition, of a pig-sty in Domain Road. It was stated that 56 pigs were herded together under unhealthy conditions, and that the regulations had not been complied with in the construction of the building. It was decided to notify the owner to comply with the requirements of the department. The Papatoetoe Town Board wrote asking for the assistance of the council in constructing a footpath on the southern end of Portage Koad. > Mr. Waters stated that there was another thorough fare in the township that required attention, and it was resolved to inform the Town Board that the council w<?uld consider co-operating in the work if the needs of both roads were considered.

The engineer advised that more stringent safety measures should be taken at the. Springs quarry during blasting operations, as complaints had been received that stones had been projected on to the roof of an adjacent house. The council approved the suggestion. Some discussion ensued upon the question of re-conditioning the wharf at Maraetai Beach. It was stated that the planking was* unsafe and that there was need for a shelter. The engineer was instructed to inspect the structure with the riding member. The engineer reported that building permits to the value of £11,689 had been granted during the month. £23,879 PROFIT. This was the profit made last year £>y the N.S.W. State Brickworks, selling bricks at half the price they fetch in the Dominion, and represents a return of £290 for ever}' £1000 invested. The Waitakere Brick and Tile Company, Ltd., is being formed to undertake brick manufacturing on a large scale in the Auckland district, and because the profits of the industry are so large that its shareholders are actually reaping fortunes every few years from their dividends, this throws open to the public a privilege confined till now to but a few. "Cambist." financial expert of the New Zealand Truth, says, in connection with the company's issue o:E share?: " he business is the sort of venture which soon runs into the money-making class. It need hardly be mentioned that such a class of business must, in the nature of things, prove a constant dividend producer. It should pay high dividends, for at its very base all productive operations should be at the lowest cos* possible, an that is another way of say ."Tig that it has no fear from any form of competition. . . The fact is, that this company is to operate a plant which Will make sevese cuts in the ordinary costs of running, and this must increase profits enormously." As well as being highly profitable, it is an investment distinguished for the soundness of its security. The estimated return on the capital is considerably over 30 per cent, per annum. Everyone in New Zealand who has savings or surplus money should apply for as many shares as they can afford to take up. Applications for shares should be sent to the company's brokers, who are Surfdale. Estates, Ltd., of 154, Queen Street, Auckland.—(Advt.)
