THE TECHNICAL COLLEGE.
CONGESTION OF CLASSES. TOTAL OF 047 STUDENTS. The Board of Managers of the Sedtion Memorial Technical College met last evening, the chairman, Mr. H. S. W. King, presiding. The director, Mr. G. J. Park, reported that- the evening classes commenced the new term on Monday. The roll contains the names of 947 students, the largest classes being held on Wednesday evenings, when 584 pupils are provided' for. It would be necessary to make immediate provision for overcoming the overcrowding by instituting Friday evening classes. At present, practically every available class room was taken up on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Some classes had very large rolls and with the number who would be joining in the next two months, it might be necessary to refuse students. It had been necessary to put clashes in rooms which were suitable only for particular purposes. Classes had to be held in a room adjoining the engineering workshop, where the noise made teaching a difficult task. The director emphasised the need for an increase in the play area attached to the college, and recommended that, steps be taken' to acquire a portion of the ground at the back of the Normal School. On the motion of Mr. J. A. C. Allum it was resolved to inform the Minister for Education of the congestion existing. A communication was received from the Auckland Master Printers' Association to the effect that a substantial sum had been raised for the equipment of a typographical room. The Education Department notified that the Public Works Department was undertaking the preparation of plans for the addition of two rooms on the roof of the building. Three applications were received for the position of woodwork instructor, Mr. Frank Parker being appointed.
