SENTENCE REMITTED.
BETS BY TELEGRAPHIST. REINSTATEMENT URGED. The sentence of seven days' imprisonment imposed on the young telegraphist, Roland Blair, in the Police Court on Friday, for laying total isa tor odds, has been remitted by the Governor-General, Jjord Jellicoe, and Blair was discharged from the Mount Eden gaol at 10.30 a.m. yesterday. Protests against the sentence on the ground .that the offence only related to small bets, of from Is to 2s 6d, were sent to the Minister for Justice by several Auckland members of Parliament, and a strongly-worded telegram of protest was forwarded by Blair's fellow-employees.
Blair's conviction entailed his suspension from the service, and representations for his reinstatement- have been, made to the Postmaster-General.
