GREAT BLIZZARD IN U.S.A.
ATLANTIC COAST SWEPT. TRAIL OF DEVASTATION. LARGE TOLL OF HUMAN LIFE By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received 7.42 p.'m.) ■ A. and N.Z. NEW YORK. Mar. 11. The worst blizzard in 35 years is sweeping the United States throughout its breadth and length. It is isolating many cities from the outer world and is leaving wreckage in its path and taking a large toll of t human life, the extent of which it is impossible yet to estimate. Five persons have been killed in New York and many injured; Several cities are under four to six feet of snow. Meteorologists describe tbe storm as a great cyclone which originated in the Gulf of Mexico. It is sweeping the Atlantic coast to the north and an 80-mile gale is moving westward, carrying sleet, rain, and snow. Wireless aerials have been destroyed and naval wireless communications have ceased, the fleets in Eastern waters being out of touch. Freezing temperatures have followed everywhere. Baltimore, it is believed, has suffered the largest property losses. The capital was without fire protection due to derangement of the alarm system.
