LECTURE ON THE SPECTRUM. •• \ '.'f'' ?. ; J i -y •"A*: lecture entitled' " Spectrum Analysis," was, delivered before the Auckland Astronomical Society by Professor, F. P. Worley, 'at the University College last evenrip. Professor Worley. demonstrated how while light when. passed through a glass '.prism or grating could be broken ■ into ' its various colours. Various lines in the .spectrum of certain elements were alsu examined. By means of spectrum analysis it was possible to discover /whether .stars were approaching or receding from the earth. When the spectrum ■•lines- of 'a star were displaced toward the violet end ; it' meant that the star was approaching and if the .displacement was toward the red end the star was receding.:
