LIGHT FOR TAUMARUNUI.
ELECTRIC SERVICE BEGINS. [BX TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENT.] TATJMABUNUI, Monday. Taumarunui presented a very gay appearance on Saturday evening, when current from the council's hydro-electric plant at Piriaka was turned on, for the first time. The main street was flooded with light from 22 large incandescent lamps, while 80 small lamps were alight in other streets. The shops in the business area were also lighted up, 54 consumers having been connected on Saturday. Another 20 street lights will be added when poles are available. The work of connecting private residences is being carried out now with all speed. The plant at present is being run by the National Electric Company, which is providing light from 6.30 p.m. until midnight. The council will take over the service in a' fortnight's time, when light and power will be available day and night.
