RESTRICTIONS ON REPORTS. OPPOSITION TO REMOVAL. [BS TELKGEAPH.PEESS ASSOCIATION.} V CHBISTCHUBCH. Saturday. The execetive of the Council of Christian Congregations adapted a resolution yesterday in regard to the motion passed by the conference of newspaper proprietors respecting the legislative restrictions on the publication of totalisator dividends and tips. After affirming that it was in the national interests to discourage to the uttermost the betting habit, which since the war had grown beyond all reason, the council's resolution states: . , "The council believes thaj; the policy embodied in existing legislation of restricting as much as possible betting to the racecourse itself is sound, and ought to be maintained. The council believes that the prohibition of the double totalisator and the closing of the telegraph service to investments are both of them wise. The council reminds the public that the publication of totalisator dividends was ; the basis of a vast system of totalisator-odds betting, which can now be engaged in Only under difficulty and uncertainty. The council believes that the publication of tips by the papers ! would be a very' direct incentive to gambling, and a very distinct retreat from the high standards maintained by the press of New .Zealand." = ■■ ... ;-:;-m'
The resolution is signed fay Archbishop Julius, president, Revs. P.* B. Haggitt, W. Arthur Hay, John Paterson, and A. B." TJarmichael, vice-presidents, and Rev. J. J. North, general secretary.
