AUCKLAND ASSOCIATION. UNIVERSITY'S HIGH SCORiL. PLAYER COMPILES CENTURY. The dub '. championship competition under -the auspices of the Auckland Cricket Association was continued on Saturday. The weather was brilliant, sn.d the wickets were in good order, with fast outfields. The match between Ponsonby and Eden was played on No. 1 wicket at Eden Park. In the first innings Ponsonby compiled 241 runs, Sneddon, 81, being the principal.scorer. Eden in the first innings lv.d scored 80 for the loss of. three wickets at tho drawing of stumps. ~ University, winning the toiss against Painell, occupied No. 2 wicket at Eden Park the whole afternoon, scoring the high figures of 378 runs for eight wickets. Player -was the hero of the side, compiling 101 runs, not out, after a sterling display of batting, scoring with good strokes all round the wicket. Bannister clayed a sound innings for 72, , and W. Garrard batted well for 65, R. Garrard scoring 48, and Kelly 41. The Parneil bowlers were tried out to bring about the dismissal of the batsmen. j Poor scores were recorded at Devonport in -the match betwoen North Shore and Grafton. The wicket was fiery and treacherous in spots, materially assisting the bowlers. North Shore, batting first, were disposed of for 85 runs in the first innings- Allcott, the Grafton left-hander, was in fine form, taking seven wickets at a, cost of only 37 ruiis. Horspool also bowled well, "taking two wickets for 8 runs. The principal scorer for North Shore* was Prater, who played a good innings for , 27, before being out "leg before" to Allcott, who kept a perfect length, and was a source of worry to the batsmen. Grafton were even more easily disposed of than their opponents, the total being only 78, of which Horspool, bv splid hatting, compiled 43. The other doublefigure scorer was Pope, who compiled 15. Coates, like .Allcott, had a "field" day, taking six wickets for 14 runs. Woodroffe lock two wickets for 13, and Dacre two for 25. In the second innings North Sl,ore had scored 23 runs for the loss of one wicket -when stumps were drawn. The outfield was fast, and the ground fielding of North Shore was excellent. PONSONBY V. EDEN. Ponsonby opened their first innings somewhat disastrously, lorang Taylor and MoLeod for 18 runs- Sneddon and Smith established » fine partnership putting on 95' runs, when Smith, who had played a good innings for 33. w»e caught by Postles, off Tjaxris. With only a single added, Sneddon, •who had played a specially sound innings for .81 was run out from a smart return by Gillespie at mid-off. The Ponsonby captain waa well eet for his century, having complete mastery over the bowling, when he was run out. Baas joined Burton, who was batting soundly, the pair carrying the score to 184. whan Burton, after scoring 87, was bowled by Harm. Ni«ld joined Bars, to see the latter bit those successive boundaries, raising the score to - 196. when he was caught by Cooper, off Irving, after scoring 30. Davia went in to compile nine runs, when he was caught and bowled by Allcott. ■with three wickets down for 54. Scott followed to score four and to be run out, in attempting * short run, by a smart pick up and fast return. With four wickets down for 66, North Shore still had a chance, when L. Dacre went in to hit a seven, but with only a few runs added, Dacre was bowled by Allcott. A rot then . set in. the team being dismissed for 85 runs. Allcott was the destroying agent, taking • seven wickets for 87 runs. Horspool took two wickets for eight runs. The city team fared worse than their opponents, being dismissed for 78 runs.
