THE UNIVERSITY SENATE.
CONSTITUTION CRITICISED. CLAIMS OF INDUSTRIES. TbX TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHHISTCHtRCH, Saturday. The constitution of the Senate of the University of New Zealand was discussed at a meeting of the Technical College Board of Governors. The chairman, Mr. C. H. Opie, said that the matter of a change in the constitution of the University Senate had been discussed by prominent members of the Farmers' Union. It appeared that a number of them were of opinion that the members of the Senate should be representative of the industries of the Dominion. At a meeting of Canterbury College graduates, this view was strongly upheld by several speakers, and he believed it would grow stronger. At the same meeting it was made plain that the Senate was in danger of being dominated by the Board of Studies, comprising the teaching staffs of the affiliated colleges. A complete revision of the constitution seemed to be the only solution of the difficulty. Agricultural and industrial interests should undoubtedly receive better representation on the Senate. Mr. Opie moved that the board communicate with other technical boards, education boards, and branches of the Farmers' Union, asking their support in an appeal to the GovernmenT to legislate in the direction of revising the constitution of the University Senate, so that adequate representation should be given to agricultural and industrial interests, Mr. W. .7. Jenkin shid that the step was a proper one to take. They were only beginning to realise the value of the primary industries to New Zealand. The motion was carried unanimously.
