UNKNOWN STEALING CHARGE.
ACCUSED SENT FOR TRIAL. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] THAMES, Saturday. At the Thames Police Court yesterday and to-day, before Mr. J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., Walter Robert McMahon, of Tapu, was charged with stealing 25 sheep, the property of Joseph Clark, farmer of Puriri and Tapu, of the value of £37 10s. The case for the police was conducted by Sergeant McDonnell, while Mr. E. J. "Clendon appeared for the accused. , Evidence was given by Joseph Clark, R. H. Jamieson, E. G. Clark, E. J. Clark, Constable Briggs, R. T. Dunlop, and Sergeant McDonnell to the effect that on November 6 last E. G. Clark purchased 21 sheep from R. H. Jamieson at Tapu through Mr. Dunlop, auctioneer. On examination of the sheep the purchaser found that eight of them bore his father's ear-mark. Mr. Jamieson then explained that these were a portion of 110 sheep purchased by him previously from W. R. McMahon, of Tapu, through the same auctioneer, and some of the others bore the same ear-mark. Mr. E. G. Clark, in company with his brother, Mr. E. J. Clark, then visited Mr. Jamieson's run at Kirita where Mr. Jamieson mustered all the sheep purchased from McMahon with others. The Messrs. Clark picked out and identified 19 sheep as being the property of their father and having their ear-mark.
The accused was committed for trial.
