THE FATE OF PROTECTION. LEADERS URGE ABANDONMENT. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 9.5 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 7. The Daily Express says that the Conservative " Shadow Cabinet," including Mr. Stanley Baldwin, and the late Ministers, the Earl of Balfour, the Earl of Birkenhead, and Mr. Austen Chamberlain, decided to recommend the meeting of the party on Monday to drop a general tariff from the party's programme/ but maintain the Safeguarding of Industries Act and the principle of Imperial preference within the limits laid down at the last Imperial Conference, also to uphold the McKenna duties and continue to condemn dumping.
