WORTHY OF REFLECTION.

Breeding systems relating to tho production of tho thoroughbred horse are always of interest. The following article by " Audax" in the Horse and Hound deals with a system that may be worth the consideration of studmasters-

" When iooime over the Highclere Stud recently much tha best foal I saw there was a bay sister to Julian and' the Wokingham Stakes winner Proconsul, by Valens out of Altioia. Both Julian and Proconsul were foaled in the year 1906. and this once more makes one wonder if there may not be far more in this system of breedingi.e., mating stock foaled in the came year— there is in figure theories or anything else, for really the keenest students of the game know extremely little.' There is certainly no road which, can command success in the breeding of the thoroughbred horse, although if one carefully goes into the conformation of the animals to be mated, sees that every reasonable care is takonj to eradicate faults that either tho horse or mare may {possess, and never neglects to adhere to any nick that has proved itself successful—however unlikely it might appear on all accepted laws of breeding—this is a very sound policy. Concerning the proposition of mating animals foaled in the same year, and about which I wrote lost spring, I have since) made deeper research on the . subject, and can now show that the following horses of much merit are the result of the mating of a sire and dam foaled in the same season in various parts of the world:—lsonomy; Stirling; Highland Fung, dam of Saraband and Superbae; Muncaster; St. Angela, dam of unbeaten St. Simon and his sister, Angelica, who threw Blue Green and Orme Meddler, unbeaten, Rose of York, dam of Roxelane, winner of the French Oaks; Diamond Jubilee, winner of.the triple crown Florizel II.; Persimmon, winner of the Derby and St. Leger: Royal Hampton and his materna} grand-dam, Mrs. Lincoln: Zuleika, maternal jjrand-dam of Rosebery; The Flower Safety, maternal grand-dam of the triple crown hero Common, Goldfinch, and the St. Leger winner Throstle; Malpractice, maternal grand-dam of that great winner and triple crown champion, Isinglass; Wellingtonia, sire of brilliant Plaisanterie and other good winners; True Heart, dam of Arbitrator, by Sonon; Spinaway, winner of the One Thousand Guineas and Oaks; Vahren, dam of the great and never beaten The Tetrarch; Castama, dam of Vahren; Petrel, grand-dam of Sir Archibald, sire of Irish Elegance; Doris; Sunstar; 4£elle, dam of Zealot; Frzedswit. a great winner on the Continent; Medora, darr\_, of the St. Leger winner Rockingham; Echidna, dam of The .Baron, who won the £<t.
