BUSY CUSTOMS OFFICE.

GOODS CLEARED FROM BOND. IMPORTATIONS FROM GERMANY. The staff of the Auckland Customs Department has been kept very busy during the Christmas and New Year holidays, owing to heavy importations. The bond stores have been clearing quickly as merchants have been anxious to replace their depleted stocks after- the Christmas trade. Small quantities of German goods have been arriving regularly, and these have been subjected to careful investigation by the customs officials before their admission. Contrary to expectations, most of these ex-enemy goods are not exceptionally cheap. In the main they are subject only to the 33 1-3 per cent, duty which is imposed upon' the imports from France and other European countries. A very small proportion of German manufactured products carries the additional burden of the depreciated currency duty. A large number of overseas vessels have arrived in Auckland within the last week, and this may be taken as an indication that the opening quarter of the New Year will be a busy one for the customs officials. »
