STUD NOTES.

HIGH-PRICED MARES. B¥ PHAETON.

! Descendants of The Tetraroh. continue to command great prices in England, and" the latest instance is furnished -in a recent London cablegram, which states that at an auction of the late Lord Manton'e horses the five-year-old mare Tetrabazsia realised POOOgns. This daughter of The Tetraroh figured in the sale-ring when a yearling, ana the commissioner acting for Lord wanton had to carry the bidding to 6000gna lor the possession of the filly ere he silenced the opposition. Tetrabazaia was still a maiden performer at the end of her three-year-old career, but last season she won stakes to the valuer of £4835, The chancea . are, , 1 think, that Tetrabawia has .been, bought ostensibly for the stud. The following is a list of the leading prices paid for brood mares under the hammer 1 in England: — ' Gns. La Fleche. by St. Simon •..'.. V. 12.600 Flair, by St. Fruequin, with colt foal by Gallinule 15.000 Lesbia, by St. Frusqum .. . . 9,000 Sceptre, by Persimmon . . . , 7.000 Salamandra.by St. Frusqum. in foal to The Tetrarch •-„ • • , • 16,000 Reina de Pechos, by Roi Herode. in foal to Gay Crusader . . . . 6.000 Tetrabazzia, by The Tetrarch . . 6,000 Salamandra. who figures at the head of the list as the hltfhest-priced brood mare sold under the hammer, it will be observed from the particulars, had a colt foal at foot by The Tetrarch when she was" bought for lh.OOOgna some three years back. Lord Furness. was the buyer of Salamandra, and me foal that followed his dam into the ring figured among the yearlings sent up to miction- at DoncasteT in September, 1922, when the youngster fell to the commissioner aiding for H.H. the -Aga Khan at 3000gns. Under the name of Salmon Trout the colt in question 1 won the Prendergast Stakes at New. market just before the last mail to hand left London, and he is ticked off as a likely one to race well at three years old. In 1903 Sceptre was bought privately by Sir William Bass for 26,000gn5, and when he sent her to auction in 1912 her produce sold by auction up to that data had reahised 14,950gna. When La Fleche was quitted for; 12.600gn5. quite a lot of people expressed the opinion that she was far too expensive, but six of her foals that went into the market realised Sl.OOOgns. Flair and her full sister, Lesbia, attained no fame as matrons, and they were both bad speculations. In 1912 Lord Bosebery bought the Derby ; winner, Signorinetta (by Chaleureuic—SigI norina) privately from Chevalier Ginistrelli for IO.OOOgus, but the high-priced mare has failed to produce anything of note.

PAPYRUS FOR THE STUD. With the prospects of a great revenue being derived from stud fees, many owners nowadays curtail the racing career of their horses, and it is not uncommon to find a classic winner being entered on the sires' list in the year immediately following that in which distinction cams to him in a classic event at three years old. That would appear to be the policy decided upon with Papyrus, for, according to an English writer, the son of Tracey has run his last race; and that he is dettir>d for the stud next year. It was stated some little time back that an American breeder had made an offer of 420.000 for Papyrus, but maybe Mr. B. Irish, owner of the English Derby winner, takes the optimist view that there is a larger sum to be made out of Papyrus by standing the horse in England than making a sale. Paoyrus wss bought when a yearling for SSOOgns., and hs is well entitled to be regarded as a prise of the sale ring.
