MANUKAU COUNTY COUNCIL.
MANGERE DISTRICT ROADS. FORMATION AND MAINTENANCE. The Manukau County Council met yesterday, the chairman, Mr. P. M. Walters, presiding. There were > also present : Messrs. S. W. House, T. Speechlay, F. Granger, F. Kearsley, G. H. Morrison, and J. M.Davies.
Considerable attention was devoted to the question of formation and maintenance of the tar-sealed roads at Mangere. The engineer, Mr. C. R. Pease, reported that the increasing . summer heat had resulted in considerable " bleeding" to the tarred surfaces, but that all the roads, in different places as required, had been treated with a light top-dressing of clean scoria. -. • . f It was decided on the recommendation of a special committee, that the formation of Robertson Road, be carried out by the council at a cost of £1708, and that the sealing of ' the surface in bitumen be carried i out by the Restar Company, which tendered for the work at £2388: In view of the fact that the Staveley bitumen mat is practically a new thing on Auckland roads, it was considered advis-' able that the company should give a guarantee as to its successful maintenance after completion' of the work, before the tender was accepted .; v '- # •.. " A committee's - recommendation that a tar-sealing coat should be r given to Kirkbride Road, Mangere, as early as possible, was referred back to the committee with powar to act.. ' , '. The engineer was instructed to prepare plans and - specifications v and ■• call tenders for completing the loan work on the Win Station Road.: -: '' ' ■• Hi was decided to take a. poll of . ratepayers in ■, the Mangere Riding on January 23, on a proposal to raise a supplementary loan '';. of £1260 to complete;' the erection of a public hall sit Mangere East. The sum of £2750 was :, previously /raised for this purpose, but it was found neces-sary-to! bring the total to £4000., J' A circular letter received from the Bay of Islands County Council asked for support 'in urging the Government to hand over to local bodies a portion: of the rents collected from •Government' and soldier settlement properties: from which the local bodies ji concerned found Wit I impossible :to eolket rates.
