STORY OF DISCOVERY. : - [nunc-i.btm OWN CORRESPONDENT.] " SYDNEY, Dec.' 15.'' ! .The people of Orange, one of the leadI ing country 4 towns of New South Wales, j will shortly celebrate one of the ? most i notable events ,in • Australian history, with j the unveiling of ■an obelisk- at a | little j neighbouring place- called Ophir to "mark tbe%ite of the first discovery in Australia of payable gold, between April 7 : and April 12, 1851. "5- Those responsible for the discovery were Edward Hammond Hargreaves, John Eardman Australia Lister, James Tom and William Tom. From " experience gained : ; in onnia, Hargreaves formed the idea that the district was auriferous and he found the first gold on February 12, 1851. He explained to the others how to prospect and make use of a miner's cradle and there followed the discovery of payable s gold in April by Lister and William Tom. \
