HUGE AUSTRALIAN ENGINE.
WEIGHT OF 300 TONS. According to a Sydney paper Messrs. Hoskins' Iron -and Steel Company are commencing the erection of the blast furnaces of what is declared to be the largest engine in the Commonwealth. Half of it ha s already arrived from the manufacturers in 'Victoria, and many of the parts were so heavy that only the breakdown gang's crane from Harden was strong enough to ■ undertake its transhipment at the Victorian border.
The engine, which is a compressed steel dry blower, is for blast power, and its total weight is over 300 tons. Following are the weights of some of the parts already to hand: Low pressure cylinder, 22 tons; high pressure cylinder, 14 tons; crank shaft, 21 tons; fly-wheel (which is in two parts and was conveyed in two trucks), 26 tons; casting (to take crosshead and crankshaft bearing), 31£ tons; air receivers, 9 tons. The bores of the low and high pressure cylinders measure 4ft. and 3ft. respectively.
