One of New Zealand's oldest pioneer* - J passed away yesterday, at the age \of 83, j in ; the;- person of Mr. - Henry • William Brewer. ,- The late Mr.';-Brewer arrived in the Dominion in 1857 by the sailing ship Merchantman, and V' as a ' young ; man ihe entered*'• the •' Civil Service ±as .; a [ customs >3? officer. In . this capacity 'he became well known on the .West Coast, and the pursuit/of his. work brought him into close contact with activities * during the Maori*:, war. He later was transferred to th« PS Customs Department in Auckland,after M which he was * stationed in Christchurch ;|: and Oamarn in turn. . He was finally attached ' to the . staff at the. Customs . Audit Department $. in the Wellington office, where ihe earned a reputation i for -his intricate knowledge of customs - and tariff ■ \ matters, ; arid . his advice ' was ; frequently sought upon the compilation of statistics f for Parliamentary use.. Its deceased was -'an'.' enthusiastic ; Freemason, and^'iwas g;■% for l some ; time master r ? of - a " Southern ,? lodge. Mr. Brewer > retired from nctive v;;; life , ail' the- ago of 65, and about. 12. years > ago he.;;came to Auckland, where lie re- t { tided with his daughter," Mrs. Payne, afc Kpaom, up to the time of his death.
