JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL.
£773 RAISED FOR GROUNDS.
The closing function in' connection with the campaign to raise ' funds for the improvement of the Kowhai Junior High School grounds took place at the _ school on Saturday afternoon. A . gathering of about , 1500 ; was present, including Mr. L. E. ; Rhodes, Mayor of Mount Albert, and Messrs. R. H. A. Potter chairman of the Mount f Eden School Committee,. and R. J. Allingham, chairman pf the Mount Albert Committee, and J- C'orrie, chairman of the Edendale Committee. The campaign which has extended over six months, has been most successful, the nam of £773 having been , raised. The Education •, Department made a pant of £450, and agreed to subsidise £ tor £ all voluntary contributions s over and above that amount. As ' the estimated cost ,of the ground improvement scheme was £3000, • this i left £1300 to be raised. Jv The district was Idivided . into three areas, Mount Albert, : Edendale, and . Mount Eden, and * queen carnival organised. Various functions have been held during the past few months, and on Saturday it was announced that the Edendale , princess, Dorothy ... Cunningham, had topped the poll with 29.811 votes, representing £371, with the Mount * Albert princess, Joyce Graham, second, .with 21,517 votes, representing £268, and Mount . Eden .princess, Ruth Taylor, third ,with 10,543 votes, representing £131. ' During the afternoon <an interesting sports programme .was carried out, under the direction of the teachers of the Kowhai School, the principal,, Mr, R. E. Rodman, acting as general director. . The senior tug-of-war for the pupils of the High School, wag won by Mount Eden, while the Edendale pupils attending Kowhai won the junior tug-of-war. .-Interesting physical drill displays were provided by 250 boy pupils i and 200 girls of the Kowhai School, while a squad; of boys from Edendale gave a., similar exhibition. . A•> marching display and an acrobatic " rough and tumble" were provided by girls .and; ,boys respectively from the Mount . ' Albert School, and singing and reciting competitions held. ' The Devonport Boys' - Band rendered a musical programme. , At the close of the sports displays those present assembled to hear the announcement of the result of the queen carnival. ; Mr. R. E. Redman, principal of the school, said they wer« extremely lucky in having hfd such an enthusiastic body of workers.; The result, he considered, had been magnificent. He wished to specially thank Mrs. A. M. Wilson, secretary of the Kowhai Junior High School Committee, for the tremendous energy she had /put into the campaign. Speeches were also .delivered by Mr. J. Corrie, chairman of the Edendale sectional committee, on behalf of the " queen," and by Mr. S. E. Chappell, chairman of ,the Kowhai Junior High School Committee. % :.... *
