MAORI TO PAY RATES.
RHETORICAL PLEA FAILS.
A peculiar document was handed to Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.j yesterday morning in the Magistrate's Court by a Maori resident of Orakei, Otene Paul, who appeared to defend an action brought against him by the Orakei Road Board (Mr. Stephens) for the ~ recovery of arrears inmates to the value of £6 13s /»d. The document set out that the land upon which the rates were claimed was a native reserve, and as such was not liable to levies. The screed was couched in a quaint rhetorical style and contained numerous Biblical references. The magistrate was not disposed to accept the Maori's contention, and accordingly gave judgment for the plaintiffs for the amount claimed.
