COMPETING FOR SETTLERS
CANADA TO BID HIGH. REBATES FOP CHILDREN. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 4.5 p.m.) MONTREAL. Nov. 23. The Ottawa correspondent of the Montreal Star states that Canada will soon become a lively competitor for immigrants with Australia, because she needs settlers to develop the country. The Dominion Immigration Office estimates that 125,000 immigrants will have entered at the close of the calendar year, but the disquieting fact is that the exodus from Canada exceeds the influx. The Government is planning an intensive campaign to attract British sutlers, and the Immigration Department is endeavouring to obtain a reduction of steamship rates, regarding which the companies have not committed themselves. The Government further intends to remove all entrance restrictions and to defray parents' outlay for children's passage. By this means it is hoped to triple the influx in 1924.
