ASLEEP ON A RAILWAY.
TRAIN STOPS IN TIME. MAN MISTAKEN FOR SACKS. Selecting a spot within two feet of the railway lino near, Chaneys, James Hazelhurst prepared himself to have what might have been his last sleep. He was charged before Mr. vein Wilson. S.M., in the Christchurch Magistrate's Court | with having trespassed on the railway. ] "The man went off to sleep on the railway track," said Senior-Sergeant F. Lewin. "It was at 5.30 p.m. The enginedriver saw what ho thought was a bundle of sacks ahead. The bundle moved slightly and the train was brought, to a standstill. Hazelhurst was sleeping within two feet of the rails. Hazelhurst had been drinking. , The magistrate remarked that there had been accidents on the line at Chaneys. In the last instance in which a man was killed 'between Kaiapoi and Chaneys the victim was a man who was i drunk. A fine of 20s with costs was imposed.
