COMING SEASON'S WHEAT.

SHORT YIELD EXP; -TED. Wheat crop* in Canterbury generally are looking healthy, hut September-sown fields are very short and urgently require a Born 1 downpour of rain to offset the effects of the winds and to hasten growth. Earlier in the season the conditions were quite favourable for good yields from spring-sown crops, as the soil (had a great reserve of moisture, and normal weather conditions only were required to ensure good results. However. uhe dry month has made li«ht land crops very backward for such an advanced period of the season. Should prosent conditions continue much longer,, the eiops will be very short and the yields light. . . Viewing the prospects at present in the lirfht of Hhe 6tati»tio>-n'fl figures it would appear that the court-:y is in for a wheat rhortage. The official estimated area thi.-* year is 185,000 acres; last year the actual area harvested was 5:76,956 acres. The full yield from last year's estimate has not yet been handled, and possibly there are sti'l seme southern-grown stacks to thresh, although it is natural to suppose that little would be left in stack. There is one aspect of the statistician's figures, however, that should not be overlooked. The returns were collected when sowing on account of the broken weather was at a standstill, and when many farmers were faced with the necessity of substituting eome other crop. However, the subsequent improvement of tihe weather and the wu*ly circulated Teports that the autumn-gown area was , alarmingly small, stimulated spring-sowing to a degree not expected when the official returns were made. The extent to which this factor may increase the final area cannot be estimated, but even if it brought the figures to 210,000 or 215,000 acres from the 185,000 estimated, a fairly substantial shortage seems unavoidable.
