TROTTING.

OTAHUHU CLUB'S MEETING. EXCITING CONTESTS. § DEAD HEAT IN LEADING RACE. "': • The Otahuhu Trotting Club's Spring ' .-deeting was concluded on Saturday when there? was an attendance of about 19 000 at Alexandra Park, At various stages rain threatened bat the sun always • triumphed, and though a strong southwest wind was in evidence through- ■ out the latter part, of the day the enjoyment of the afternoon was not seriously affected thereby. ; From first to last the meeting was well managed and the concluding event was started well up to time. The stipendiary Messrs. T. H. D»vey and A. G. Mane*, - ere present. was of the order &£&•&&& concluded with the eighth event, it was S that the mvestments amounted to £64 448 10s, compared with £t8,7y4 Lvs of the second day of last year; but in connection therewith it has to be stated that the second day of the P"«£"« spring gathering was held on a Wednesday. The grand total i*iia7<*N for the day. The grand total (gJJj. ,d J» ™ d . meeting, however, was *»*«* m aa vance of . last year figures, when £104,977 10s represented the receipts at the machine. . The Racing. * The programme opened with the Innovation Handicap, for whichi bracketted pair from A. J- Julian's stable, in trie shape of Merrimax and Ansehne, was the popular fancy. Adeline took command at "he end of six furlongs, and racing it out in attractive style she won easily. , Gold Flake was the one most strongly supported for the Epsom Handicap, and he uistified the confidence, but he had to be asked for the last bit to defeat. Child Audubon, who made the pace for over a mile. Franklin Handicap cam© up When the Franklin Handicap came up for decision Delavan Quest was pounced upon in such vigorous style that Tie was quickly a warm favourite. The New South "Wales horse rattled along in great stvle when the field was despatched, and disposing of his handicap of PSjja. bnllantly, he was found in command .at the end of a furlong. Hypo and Florrie Bingen each had a cut at Delaven Quest, and Florrie Bingen seemed to be going as well as the favourite when they turned for home. Delayar, Quest, however, won easilv at the finish. _1 The succeeding event was the Liverpool Handicap and the 14 horses coloured on the card were found on hand to luim their engagements- Great Bingen was selected for the position of favourite. The contest that ensued was of a most , interesting character, and the finish raised to a high pitch. Blue Mountain Kin? (who was next the rails), Sheik (m the centre) and Ahuriri (on the outside), had their names excitedly called; and as the two first-named dashed past the post en very close terms the decision of the judge was awaited amid pent-up ex- . citement. A dead -heat was the judge decision. The stewards met after the race to consider the handling of Sheik, who bored over to Ahuriri in the race up the straight. P. Riddle admitted that his horse went over a bit under pressure. After considering the evidence bearing on the incident, the stewards decided to allow the judge's ; decision to stand.: The I'apatoetoe Handicap- was popularly, summed up in favour of Mulwarea; and lie answered all demands. Taking command three furlongs from homo Mulwaree had matters all his own, way. The Visitors' Handicap brought out a field of 14,. Golden Gate ruling favourite. When" the last three furlongs was entered ... on Wimmera King was alihrig along w|ftti a commanding lead, but, he broke- badly at the * top stretch.' Hie Squire trotted' it out well, and won amid much enthusiasm. Wimmera King came home second, but a galloping feat on his part led to his being distanced by th© stewards,, and second and third places respectively were given to McKinney Lass and Nikora The Chatham ■ Handicap brought out a field ©freight, the back-marker, All Bell, being,srSade favourite- All Bell made a courageous Ibid for victory, but First Car- , bine gamely combatted the challenge on - the part of the favourite, and won by three-quarters of a length. , The 15 coloured on the card for the Royal Oak Handicap -were harnessed to contest that- event, but in performing his preliminary' Prince Poole injured one of his forelegs, and. the stewards consented to his being withdrawn. The backers of Prince Pools -were.given a refund of their money. Cute i tad was made a better favourite than Leuglen, but the latter led , the field home,' with-Master Councillor in the role off runner-up. When the contest had progressed about three furlongs Nipper broke, and in being steadied .Red Star and Mintson each in turn came into collision. ' Excepting that the sulkies were damaged and the trio involved in the meleo were thro'vn out of the race, no , injury resulted... " .::/.' I . • , Details of the Contests.
