CATTLE DISEASE IN THE WEST

STRICT QUARANTINE ESTABLISHED Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 9.5 p.m.) PERTH. Not. 23. Though the outbreak of cattle disease has not been definitely diagnosed as rinderpest, most drastic steps have been taken to prevent, its spread. The strictest quarantine hasv been established, and all animals showing symptoms of • disease are shot and incinerated. The chief inspector of stock in Queensland says that if the disease, proves to be rinderpest the matter will be very serious, but the dry climate and sunshine of Australia will be a great aid in stamping it out.

LEGISLATION IN N.S. WALES.

SYDNEY. Nov. 23 The Lesgislative Assembly carried the first reading of the Ne Temere Decree Bill by 47 votes to 34.' • — After a lively discussion on the motion for leave to introduce the measure it was explained that the Bill was not aimed at the doctrinal teachings of "any church, but was intended to prevent persons impugning marriages lawfully contracted. The Bill will be discussed in detail at the second reading.

OPIUM TRAFFIC CONTROL. , SYDNEY, Nov. 23. A Bill has been introduced to regulate the opium traffic. It provides for heavy fines ranging from £1000 down for persons found with the drug, and propose# to impose sentences of 10 years' imprisonment on owners of houses where opium smoking is permitted.
