POTATO PRICES COLLAPSE.

VERY HEAVY SUPPLIES.

EFFECT OF RECENT RAINS.

The Auckland market for potatoes suffered a collapse yesterday following the arrival of exceptionally heavy supplies from Pukekohe, Avondale, and Panmure. Whereas ten days ago the average whole-, sale price was about 2d per lb. or over, yesterday the price was about Id.

• The occurrence is unusual, arid is . due largely to very rapid maturing in the potato beds. This season's potatoes have come on with a great swing, assisted in no small; degree by the substantial rains which fell some ten days ago. ' One grower estimated yesterday that these rains were responsible , for a 25 i per cant, increase in the yield from his fields this year. At present the Pukekohe fields are in the flush of their bi-annual season, while supplies from Avondale and Panmure are reaching the market in large quantities simultaneously.
