ICE PLACED IN MILK.

VENDOR FINED TEN POUNDS.

An unusual explanation for the presence of water in milk sold by her was given by the proprietress of a dairy in Great North Road, Sarah Anne Stennetfc, when charged in the Police Court yesterday before Mr." J. W. Poynton, S.M., with having sold milk containing 14.54' per cent, of water, the r-dpion of which was prohibited by regulations under the Sale of Food and Drugs Act. Evidence was given by N. F. Furness, health inspector, to the effect that he purchased a sample of milk from defendant. He produced the analyst's report. _ I Defendant's explanation was that on the previous night she had half a gallon of milk unsold and put a piece of ice in it to keep the milk fresh, as the weather was hot and muggy. She had no intention of watering ' the milk. Questioned, defendant said «-he sold about 47 gallons of milk a week. The magistrate remarked that ice was water, and putting ice in milk was the, same as putting water in it. A fine of £10 and costs was imposed.

UNCLEAN MEAT CONVEYANCES. Two carriers, Frank Blackmore and William John Daw, each : denied chaises of using an unclean motor truck for the conveyance of meat and not t keeping the meat properly covered. Evidence regarding the condition of the trucks was given by an inspector, who said that both defendants had been, previously warned; Blackmore said he washed the - boards every day and endeavoured to ' keep the truck in proper condition. Daw also said he did his best. . LATE INCOME TAX RETURNS. A fine of £10 and costs was imposed on the firm of Alexander Harvey and Sons, ■who admitted having failed to furnish income -tax returns •' within the required period. , The returns had been sent in late, but it was stated that there had been no attempt to evade tax.

TWO CASES REMANDED. \ Charged with, having ' had unlawful carnal knowledge rf a girt aged 14 year# and 7 months at. Kopaki on February 12, Thomas • McMullen, aged 42, -was remanded till Monday. ; James lan Stewart Colquhoun was remanded ;to ! appear at Patea next Friday on a charge of having at Patea, on October 25, stolen £17 lfo, the property of R. J. Wilson and F. Wildon.
