TOILET PREPARATIONS.

« There are ' many toilet preparations which are ' costly to buy but which can be manufactured at home with very little trouble. The following are tried recipes : — ' A shampoo Mix together two ounces of the best green soft soap —obtainable from a chemistwith two tablespoonfuls of methylated spirit. Add a few drops o\ perfume if desired. This shampoo is an excellent cleanser, and leaves Che hair beautifully glossy. A hair tonic: Mix together Kalf a teaspoonful of oil of rosemary and four tablespoonfuls of rum. Shake the mixture well in a bottle before using. This will bo found as efficacious as tho most expensive • tonic. *•; To whiten the' skin :—Half- a stone jam jar of lib. size with .white rose leaves. Pour over these quarter of a pint, of strained lemon juice, and the same amount of brandy or rectified spirits of wine. Press the leaved firmly down, cover the jar, and leave all night. In. the morning turn the mixture into a mortar if possible; if not!, into a strong bowl and bruise the leaves thoroughly with a nestle or a rol-ling-pin. Strain the liquid ; bottle it and cork. A little rubbed into the skin will whiten it considerably.

Cucumber lotion :—Out six cucumbers into slices about half an inch ftiick without removing the skin. Steam them gently until they are soft and "then rub them through a sieve or colander. The pulp should then be pressed through cheese cloth •or a tammy ololb. Measure the pulp, and for each three ounces add ' half a pint of distilled rosewater, half a drachm of , powdered borax, and 25 drops of tincture of benz#n. This is an excellent skin lotion. Water softener :—Put! a »>lb. of pearl barley, -{lb. of rice, ilb. of fine oatmeal, Jib. of bran, and 2oz. of dried lavender in a saucepan with three quarts of water. •Simmer slowly for an hour and then add to the bath.. This has a, wonderful effect on the skin and gives a most -.telightful feeling. Bath powder Pufl lib. of bran, lib. of fine oatmeal, and ilb. 'of powdered orns"rooty in a tin with a few pieces of dried orange and lemon peel. Mix wall together and then divide into twelve portions, tying each up in a, bag of butter muslin. One of these bags should be thrown in Che bath while the water in. running, and when the bath is ready i!« should 'be well squeezed in the water. This gives a .delightfully refreshing feeling to the bath.
