NOTES FROM ELLERSLIE

OSS I OF THE TRAOKB. BT ARCHER. Peter Amass, whose form was consistently good last season, is coming to hand nicely again, and was apparently much benefited by his spell at the conclusion of the Grand National meeting. This fellow thrives on racing, and when he has done a little more work should be returning to the winning list. ' s

J. O'Shea was offered an engagement to ride Suggestion in the Great Northern Derby, but he has accepted an engagement to ride Tarleton in that event in preference. H. Dulieu will have the mount on Matinee in the Alison Cup. If present intentions are carried out, F. Loomb will be represented at Takapuna by Deeert Glow, Smoke, and Lady Hill. A. McDonald intends coming north to steer Lady Hill in her engagements at Takapuna.

Danton and Rosulfa*, who are engaged in hurdle events at Takapcina, sire being schooled over hurdles at Avondale, where they are trained. Both are reported to have shaped satisfactorily in recent displays. That smart sprinter, Royal Blood, who recently returned from Sydney, where he failed to reveal any form, is now working at Avondale under the direction of W. Kirk.

Rapine returned to New Zealand by the Moeraki. which arrived at "Wellington on Tuesday. The —Sweet Alice filly that is being educated at Ellerslie by F. Dow ding for Messrs. D. J. and M. J. Lynch, is an attractive-looking young lady, and bears a very racy appearance. Sho ie & half sister to Clonmel and Kitty Be- 1 lairs, both of whom won 'races.

The Inst batch of English thoroughbreds landed in Auckland by Dr. Ring are being broken in by J. Adoljh, several of them having already been ridden. Black Ronald, the winner of the New Zealand Derby, is reported to be training on nicely, and all going well is expected to make hie next public appearance at the Auckland Summer Meeting.

Prince Randall (Rutherford) and Penona (R. Olive) were companions in a schooling bout over four flights of hurdles at Ellerslie yeetert! ~y morning. The former finished well in front and gave a good display, while Penona fenced very carefully. Ridinj engagements fixed for the first day of the Takapuna meeting are as follow:H. Goldfinch: Loyal Irish, Cool Stimulants, Gold Fern, and Charlady. J. O'Shea: Kipo, Golden Bubble, and Dominant. S. Walls: Pittsworth, and St. Waipa. E. Keesing: Boomefday. S. Henderson: Penona. Pentagram, and General Pryde. R. Manson: Ruapapa, Sunny Roe, and Princess Nat*. L. Manson: Titaness and Polini. H. Wiggins: Musketoon, Te Tohi, Tactful, and Heroulean. J. Roach: Scottish Knight. M. O'Shea; Hyginas.

A. J, McFlynn, who has been incapacitated with a broken collarbone, has made a good recovery, and is riding work again at Ellerslie. He will be riding at the 'I'akapuna meeting next week.

R. Reed, who returned from Australia last wee*, intends to do the first day of the Feildiniz meeting and then come north for the Takapuna meeting. Reed will very likely have the mount on Stork in the Alison Cup. -Princess Nata is expected to arrive from Gisbome to-morrow with a view to fulfilling her en easements at T&kapuna. She will join C. Norgrove's team at EUerslie on arrival. Though he raced well at Hamilton, "King Qurn was suffering from the effects of a oold, and hie owner (wisely treated him to a let-up after the meeting. He is reported to havti shaken off hi? ' ailment and is to be set going attain with ... view to competing at the Waipa and Auckland summer meetings. The yearling filly by Paper, Money out of Killala, purchased at the Chmtchurch sales by Mr. F. Earl, arrived from, the South recently. She will be broken in early in the coming year. ( -

Civilform and Prince Hal, who ran first and second respectively in the Pohangina Handicap at the Ashhurst meeting on Wednesday, occupied the same position* in that event last year. •■/•'■ As the result of an inquiry after the running of the Raumai Welter Handicap at Ashhurst on Wednesday Mackie, the nder of' March. On, was severely cautioned for his handling of his mount in the straight, and Barry, the rider of Counter Attack, was reprimanded for giving unsatisfactory evidence. The imported filly Maria of Hereford, owned by Messrs. J. C. and P. S. Gleeson and trained by J. T. Jamieson at Woodville, is entered for hack events at the Woodville summer meeting. , The Trenthara trainer, 8. Reid, has booked accommodation for two horses at J. Shaw# stables at Ellerslie for the Auckland summer meeting. Charlady continues to do : nicely in her work at Ellerslie. The daughter of Absurd, who cost Mr. H. Friedlander a big figure, has up to the present proved a disappointment, but she. has shown sufficient pace to' suggest that she will be capable of getting among the winners shortly. - Loyal Irish has done well . since annexing the Kmc Edward Memorial Handicap at the Auckland spring meeting, and is in great heart at present. He was finishing strongly at the conclusion of his mile gallop with Gold Ruin on Thursday morning, and may credit his owner with some more stake-money before the season is much further advanced. Information is to hand from Christchurch that The Polymnian, who finished second to Black Ronald in the New Zealand Derby, has been in the paddock ever since, and it is doubtful if his owner's intention of sending (him to Ellerslie to contest the Great Northern Derby will be carried out. Amiforra is in rare health after his exertions at the Auckland spring meeting. He is bowling along attractively on the track, and it seems as if bis winning turn is not ,far off. -

P. Rayner has been engaged to ride Bro&dwood in the Borough Handicap at Takapuna. »

Formalin appears to be regaining some of h<sr former»diush, and has hardened in con' dition and muscled up a (food deal of late. She ran a useful round of the No. 3 ffrww track on Thursday morning with Lord Thjirntiam. and held her companion very easily. / ■ V-. s
