At Cambridge University he won an exhibition and foundation scholarship, and graduated B-A-first-class in the . classical tripos of 18'0At; the end .of 1879 he was appointed professor of classics "at Canterbury Col- ■ lege, ' after having been . a master riff fillseveral schools in - England. J He was a , well-known member of the CHnstchurch' Golf Club. -I When ,he first V went to Canterbury College he was an active footballer, and played the game for soma time- > : He also instituted the Haslam, ;.; Shield at Canterbury ..College, for shoot* ing.
