UNITED STATES CONGRESS.

EFFECTS OF BY-ELECTIONS. SENATE MAJORITY REDUCED. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 8.44 p.m.) WASHINGTON. Nov. 6. The Republican majority in the Senate has been reduced to six by to-day's byelections. Incomplete returns indicate that the Republican majority in the House of Representatives is practically unchanged. The elections were necessary to fill vacancies caused by death. The Presidential policy apparently did not affect the contests, which were fought on provincial issues. New York returned two Democrats and two Republicans to the House of Representatives. Democrats are in the lead for the Governor and other State officials in six States. The Senate will have 51 Republicans, 43 Democrats, and 2 Farmer-Labour members. The House will have 225 Republicans, 205 Democrats, and 3 Independent members in the next Congress. Two vacancies arc yet to be filled. The Senate by-election was in the State of Vermont. The above message indicates that one Democratic and one FarmerLabour candidate were returned for two seats previously held by Republicans.
