A thousand employees ceased work at the metropolitan gasworks as a ';protest against the refuial of the company to put on additional men in each shift to cope with increased work. 7; .•■■"■':•.;;,:;.
• Tho employees at the South Melbourne and. Fitzroy gasworks later struck in sympathy with the Wert -Melbourne strikers, and there aro now ~ over 2000 workers idle. ■ ' '
At a mass meeting the men decided not to return until the dispute was settled in their favour. The company states that the men '-'"have scrapped conciliation and resorted to direct action, and warns the ;.': public that; the supply of ~ gas ;'. mtfsfc be immediately curtailed.: .:•. ; / : . .•'• ■
