THE WAKEFORD CASE.

SLANDER ACTION FOLLOWS.

ARCHDEACON SUES CLERK. A. and N.Z. Oct. 16: Before Mr. Justice Darling and a special jury, Archdeacon Wakeford sued Henry Wright, managing clerk for the solicitors employed by the Bishop of Lincoln in the recent proceedings against the archdeacon before the Consistory Court, claiming damages for alleged slander.

It was alleged that Wright said to a clergyman: "I know John Wakeford is guilty. I myself traced him to various hotels with women."

Wright is also alleged to have said on another occasion: "Wakeford h a, very nice fellow, if he would only keep the Seventh Commandment."

Defendant denied slander, and pleaded bona-fide fair comment without malice.
