OBITUARY.
MR. GAVIN WALLAGE. 'Mr. Gavin Wallace, a well-known figure 1 in the grocery; trade, died ; at Otahuhui yesterday, morning in 1 his « 83rd year, as the result of a fall? some days ago. Mr. Wallace- was bora in Glasgow, where ha ' ■ commenced business. After coming to .! New Zealand, he carred on business successfully in various centres, including', ; Thames and Te Puke. Subsequently ho ; came to Auckland, and built up a large business in Karahgahiipe Road. Owing to "failing health, he sold the business to Mr. H. M. ;• Smceton : and:engaged ;in ; farming in the Bay of Plenty.' On relinquishing .<*" . farming he carried on i business :in Thames and later at Otahuhu. Respected by "all '■ who came into contact with him, Mr. Wallace will be missed by a large circle - Of friends. Mr. Wallace leaves three sons and three daughters. ''■- f MRS. JACOB CARTER. Mrs. Rebecca Mary Carter, widow of -: the late Mr. Jacob Carter, passed away on Saturday;- at Bombay. Sirs. Carter came from England about 50 years ago. ! with her husband, who pre-deceased he* by only : four months. They leave four V v Messrs;; H. and E. Carter (Bom»M). W. .Carter , Sydney and S. Carter '' (Whangamarino)— nine daughters— ' Mesdames Smallfield (Drury), Bryant (Green Lane), Guthrie (Auckland), J. Piggott (Pukakohe), Thomson (Auckland), i ! Ctolyon (Auckland), L. Baln.es, and Miss , ; A Carter;(Bombay). The funeral took place at St. Peter's Church of England - Cemetery, Bombay, on Monday, and was largely attended. MR. W. D. METRES. The death occurred to-day at the age of 76 of Mr. William Bevenish Meares, who;had had an extensive and successful business career in several parts of New Zealand. He was J born in New; South Wales, ; .and early in life he joined the Victoria Insurance Company in. Sydney. In the early "seventies" he "came to New Zealand; as manager of the company for the colony, 'making his headquarters at Dunedin. Later he "< joined the Union Insurance ; Company, .coming to Christchurch as ; general manager, and he re- \ mained with that company until it wav absorbed by the Alliance Assurance Com- j pany. Mr. Meares was appointed general ;;; ' manager? for that company, and held that position until he retired"about 10 years ago, ;He loaves a son and five daughters, his wife having died some years "ago.; Mr. -; ;0 H. 0. D.;Meares, a well-known barrister ~, and solicitor, is a' brother of the deceased. i In Dunedin and, Christchurch the • late Mr. Meares took a prominent part "-■'■, ■in matters relating to the Chambers of ■.' Commerce, and in this city held the office of president. He also took a keen interest ;:/;j in cricket, and was a well-known player ' iin Dunedin.
