ALLEGED THEFT OF HORSES

TW<JX YOUNG MEN CHARGED.

Two young men, Clyde Powell Ludwig (Mr. Mason), and Percy McGilvrey (Mr. Sullivan), were charged at the Police Court yesterday, before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., with the theft of 20 horses at Hamilton on September 29.

On the application of Chief-Detective Cumnnngs accused were remanded to appear at Hamilton next Wednesday. When counsel for accused asked for bail, Mr. Cummings recommended that this should not be granted, as accused had given the police considerable (trouble, and had hidden in the bush when a warrant was issued for their arrest. ''Some difficulty might be experienced in apprehending them if they absconded while on bail,", said Mr. Cummings. Mr. Sullivan said that accused had interests in property which would be suffiwent security. "In that case I will allow bail at £1000 each; that should be substantial enough," said the magistrate. " ABSENT FROM HIS SHIP. . A seaman from the Pakeha, Thomas Cooper, aged 40, was charged with having absented himself from his ship without leave. Accused maintained that money duo to him had not been paid. He alleged he had been "treated like a dog." He was going back to his wife and children, and did not want to stay in New Zealand. The Magistrate: We don't want you to stay here. Accused was ordered to forfeit three days' pay. -

MISCELLANEOUS CHARGES, o A third offender for drunkenness, James Hedley, aged 52, was fined £3, in default seven days' imprisonment. . " A charge of being a rogue and vagabond was preferred against Robert Young, an elderly man, who was found sleeping in an outbuilding, near the Te Kopuru post office. . On the application of SeniorSergeant Rawle accused was remanded to appear at Dargaville next Tuesday. The theft of £4 in money was the charge against George Caffery. aged 23 (Mr. Mason). A remand till October 25 was granted. Chief-Detective Cummings asked for substantial bail. Bail was fixed at. £500.

INCIDENT IN BOARDING-HOUSE.

Tho theft of a gold watch and chain valued at £10, the property of A. W. Redman, and of a pocket wallet belonging to Alexander Land, was alleged against Cecil Henry Bourke, aged 36. Leo F. Dixon stated that he shared a bedroom in a Nelson Street boardinghouse with accused, who entered the room late one night, having apparently been drinking. Shortly afterwards tho proprietor came in with Land, who said lie had been awakened by a noise in . his room, and had seen a man dressed like Bourice leave'by the door. Ha then found that his wallet was missing. The caso was adjourned until tomorrow, bail being allowed at £50.
