'"" Following on heavy rains in the high- ■"' *' : lands and the downfall in the ■ city the Yarra is in higher ' flood than it has -■'ever been "since 1900. A great body of . water came down very rapidly and all low-lying lands around Heidelberg, . Ivanhoe, Kooyong Hawthorn, Abbotsford and other suburbs are more or less under water. Many* families have been com<v.pelled to leave their homes. "■•'• Large crowds gathered on various abridges watching the- swirling floodwater f; bearing much debris to sea. The Caulfield racecourse is largely under water and all big sporting events have been postponed. Rough weather accompanied the rain and shipping is held up. Several fatalities are reported, two lads in a canoe :: capsized! near the Burnley Street Bridge ;: and one was drowned. A child was - swept away at Hothaiu, and a man was ••drowned at Snngaree while attempting • Co cross a" water channel. ' • Reports from the country state that tho rivers are in high flood and much damage has been done. A number of landslides have occurred on the railways.
