ITEMS BY NOTED PIANIST.
"IN • LIEU ,OF A SPEECH."
The principal guest at the Auckland Rotary Club's.-weekly luncheon yesterday was Mr. Benno Moiseiwitsch, the "celebrated pianist. Professor H. W. Segar: presided. There were also,; present as guests of the club Mr. Tait, touring manager for Mr. Moiseiwitsch, and Messrs. W. B. Brittain, of London; W. Stevenson and IT. Fletcher, of Dunedi : Clutha Mackenzie, W. J.V Jordan, M.P., H. S. Robertson, N. M. Spear, T. Metcalf. L. C. 11. Sparrow,' T. Holmderi, A. M. Seaman, C. F. Bennett, J. Dawson, and Bodlev. A vocal so'o, "Son n' Mine." and an. encore item given by Miss Walker were warmly applauded. Mr. Cyril Towscy acted as accompanist. , Mr. Moiseiwilsch expressed his thanks to 'the. Rotarians for the reception they had given him .and intimated that h« hoped the members would be' satisfied if he 'entertained them at the piano in lieu of making a speech. He thereupon played two popular classics. Rachmaninoff's "Prelude" and the "Marche Militaire" "(Schubert-Tausig). , The items'■■'■. evoked continued applause, and in response to the repeated requests for an encore. Mr. Moiseiwitsch returned to the instrument and played Liszt's "Liebestraume" with the touch and expression such as only a master musician could command. ■ The Rotarians. and their guests were then led by. Mr, R. M. Bras ted in the. choruses of "Cornin" Thro' the Rye" and ■'■. the "Perfect Day." .'- •. " * The . secretary, Mr. A. J. Hutchinson, announced that a telegram had. been received from the Governor-General, Lord Jellicoe, wishing the club every' success with the Boys' Week campaign. '■/
