FIRE ON A STEAMER.
WESTMORELAND'S BUNKERS." SUBDUED WITHOUT TROUBLE DEPARTURE POSTPONED. A fire was discovered, yesterday afternoon in the bunkers of the Federal Line steamer Westmoreland, which is loading for America and England at the Queen's Wharf. The fire,; the' seat of which was in the cross bunkers, between the main bunkers and the stokehold, was apparently ill an incipient stage, and was easily combated by the steamer's fire appliances. A number of waterside workers were employed for some time shifting coal from the cross bunker into the stokehold. Holes were cut, through the iron bulkhead through which water was pumped. The work of removing the coal from the bunkers was suspended late last night, when the fire apparently had been subdued. ;' The Westmoreland has on'board a very large cargo of New Zealand produce. She loaded at Dunedin, Lyttelton, : Wanganni, Wellington, and Napier, and arrived at Auckland on Monday morning '.to': complete. This morning cargo operations will be completed, and the steamer will be n. full ship, with probably nearly 12,000' tons on board. . # / The Waipori was unloading coal into the Westmoreland's bunkers yesterday, but when the fire was noticed operations were suspended. At about 8 p.m. the Waipori was shifted to the Central Wharf, and art empty coal hulk' was berthed \ alongside the Westmoreland in readiness to receive coal if it should be necessary, to unload! from the bunkers again. • _ A further examination of the locality of the fire will be made this morning, and if necessary more coal' will : be removed from J the' cross bunker as a safeguard against a-: recurrence of - fire. When this danger has been removed. * coaling : operations will resumed. •;-. ~. . c / After cargo operations have been completed this .morning, the Westmoreland will probably go to an anchorage :in the stream to continue bunkering. She was to have sailed for New: York to-day. but it is hot now certain. when she will 4be despatched. •
