Our Feilding correspondent writes:— There are not a few who put all their confidence in milking shorthorns for good remunerative results. Mr. J. H. Mason of Reid's line, in the Feilding district if. one who has achieved, good results from his herd of grade and purebred milking shorthorns over the past four years., as evidenced by the following figures:— Season. Average. No. in Herd July 31. XXir Cow. (in Heifers). 1919-20 . < . . 182 37 3920-21 ... .. 020 42 ■1921-23 ... . .. 221 42 1922-23 . > 330 .35
The increase in fat is due to the herd testing rovfiling . the best cows to keep j and breed from, using a purebred bull with a butter-fat backing, improving the I pasture and growing supplementary fodder, and never running the cows for more than four days in tha same paddock. - There were five two-year-old heifers in 1522-23 season whose productions were: 222 fat, 260 days; 261 fat, 291 days; 266 fat, 269 days; 284 fat, 289 days; 302 fat, 231 days.
