RETURNED MEN'S TRIBUTE.
A 'DOMINION APPRECIATION.
Members of the executive of the Auckland Returned Soldiers* 1 Association i; had
the sad- duty last evening of waiting upon Lady Nolan to hand to her an illuminated
address, which was in the courijo of preparation for presentation to ber husband, Sir Robert Nolan, at the time of his death. The address came from the New
Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association, which i had desired to express the appreciation of all New Zealand soldiers, of the nm«mitting self-sacrificing labours of Sir Robert in London during the whole j>eriod of the Great War. '•■■•■..
In England, i with his wife and family, when hostilities commenced, • Mr. Nolan, as he then was, attended a meeting called by the High Commissioner, Sir Thomas Maokenzie, on August 14, 1914, to decide what steps should bo taken to help Dominion soldiers. Tho New Zealand ■ War Contingent Association was formed,, and from small beginning, •it grew to a great organisation. In August, 1916, the New
Zealand Soldiers' Club was opened', in Russell Square, and it was the centre of entertainment and recreation for the men.

Mr. Nolan filled the position* of hon. secretary and officer-in-cnarg© from the time it was opened until it closed in June, 1919, and,' as is stated in; the address, the men retain vivid memories of his whole-hearted sympathy, generosity, energy, and unfailing kindness at all time's- .'■' -: ■ : :.'"'.'
In handing Lady Nolan the address, Miv E. W. Inder, president of the association, said that had General Sir Andrew "Russell, the Dominion president, been in New Zealand, he would have been present. _ Trie address was not only an expression of the appreciation of the soldiers who returned, but also of those who had not. Their periods of leave and convalesence had been brightened by the kindnesses they had received at the club in Russell Square. Lady Nolan's son-in-law, Mr. 13'. R. Übalraers, replied on her behalf. ..••'-■•
