BRITISH INDUSTRIES FAIR, 1924. His Majesty's Trs.do Commissioner in New Zealand has received advicti that the British Industries Fair, of 1924 will be held' at the White City. Shepherd's Bush, London, from April 28 to May 9» and at Castle Bromwick, Birmingham, from 1 May 12 to 23.: The fair will take place at a later date than has beon the case in previous years, when both sections have opened during the latter part of February. Tha chance of date is duo to the fact that overseas- buvers who, in the usual way, visit the United Kingdom , in the early part of the year, will in all probability delay their visits in 1924 so that they may be able to inspect both the British Industries Fair and the British Empire Exhibition, which will open on or about April 15.

OIL WELLS IN GREAT BRITAIN. Discussing the :recent search fo? oil in Great Britain, Mr. H. P. 'W. Giffard, of the Board of Trade, described to the, summer moetinc of the Institution of Mining Engineers, held in Glasgow, the operations in Derbyshire, North Staffordshire, and Scotland. In Scotland two borings were put down in the Midlothian districtat West Calder and D'Arcy, Dalkeith. The presence of gas and the discovery of a really good ♦bowing of high-grado oil at D'Arcy were encouraging, and 'there was plenty of scope for further exploratory drilling in the neighbourhood. Seoptnga of petroleum were known near Kilsyth and other points in the Lothians. In Britain eleven wells had been sunk, and in one district where oil-de'-ioMts were not previously known one well had produced over 6003 tons of oil, and was- still flowing, One- well had produced seven tons of oil, four other wells had shown traces of oil, and fiv*» wells h<*d b«rc» drv. It had been shown that oil did exist in the United Kingdom, and it was to be hoped that at some future data a small oil-pro-ducing industry would be developed.
