PAKURANGA HUNT.
SATURDAY'S MEET. ■■'.. SPORT AT MANGERE. ' The Pakuranga Hunt met at the Mangere Pound on Saturday afternoon, when an average number of followers were present. The hounds appeared quite fit and ready for work, after having- hunted at Waiuku last Wednesday and having considerable train and road travelling as a consequence. Among the horses were several which, having taken, part in the hunt races' at Ellerslio The. previous Saturday, were looking hard and well ' to take their places, in the hunting field again. The land open to the -hunt is somewhat curtailed at this late period of the season, owing to the lambing season, and some favourable country at Mangere I had to be avoided. •■','•'"• Hounds and followers proceeded from the meet to Messrs. [ Whyte Bros.' farms at Pukaki. Hounds were first thrown off in the paddocks at the foot of the Jane below the lower homestead • and after working about for< a time put up a hare which, after being hunted over the farms : ■of native landowners, ,was lost in the swamp. Scent appeared patchy and did not lie ; well, and „ some little" time elapsed before the hounds settled to another hare, which gave a' moderately good'run over Messrs., Whyte Bros.', 'farms' across the lane into Mr. E. P. Paul's land, and over the road through Messrs. P. Henwood's aud.H. Gooseman's farms and was shortly after lost on Mrs. Paul's land through the scent failing to hold. Hounds, were now' taken along the Mangero Road and down Westney Road, turning away to the right and eventually into. Mr. F. Full's farm at ''Ascot,'' Mangere.' ';'., .Hounds, worked round about the' lower slopes of the mountain and soon found a hare on the seaward side and hunted their quarry along at a' merry pace across the end of the swamp, whero another hare jumped up and the pack divided, : one hare being pushed along toward the milking sheds, afterwards' turning and seeking refugo in the swamp. Hounds 'continued to hunt ' the other quarry round the' mountain but eventually, checked near the homestead and did not .pick up the, scent again. Hounds were then sent home to the kennels. . • ; •../. ■ '■ -
