CATTLE FOR ENGLAND.
'■ —♦ : :. S. AFRICA'S OPPORTUNITY. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] . 1 = PIETERMARITZBURG. June 30. South African farmers; have welcomed the announcement that, as the- result of representations by the Union Government, j the Imperial Government has removed the embargo on the admission into Great Britain of South African slaughter cattle. The cattle are to be slaughtered at the port of landing. Cable advice received from the High Commissioner for South Africa in Loudon states that ample accommodation, including a foreign animals' wharf, exists at Birkenhead for the reception and prompt handling of slaughter cattle up' to 1000 per day, and a good, free market offers, especially up to August, when the Irish cattle begin to arrive. '■■ Cattle arriving at Birkenhead before August should realise a minimum price of 9|d per lb., dead weight! Animals are required to be of good average quality, and, say, $501b., clean weight. * * The "•. London correspondent .of the Bloemfontein Friend states that samples of South African beef submitted to the Imperial. War Office were favourably commented upon- ? and that there is a possibility of securing Imperial contracts if regular consignments of. the same ; quality can be guaranteed. There is reason for believing that one such South African contract for Aldershot was lost as no such guarantee could be given.
