LAWN TENNIS SURPRISE
SPANIARD BEATS TILDEN. A : CONTEST OF .COURTESY. ! ; ; ' / NEW YORK, July 15. Manuel Alonso '.(Spain) sensationally defeated W. . T. Tilden, ' winning the Illinois lawn tennis . singles championship at Glencoe, the sets being i 8 — 11—13', 6—3, 6—l. This is the first time Tilden has', been defeated by a ' European. Previously, he has been beaten on several occasions by: Americans' and Australians. The match ended . dramatically. Alonso served to Tilden, and the latter's return hit the net. Alonso exclaimed, "It was a net ball; I must serve again." The linesman ruled against the, Spaniard, who threw the balls and his racquet on to the ground. , The umpire intervened, and allowed a replay. ; . Alonso, however, refused to , take advantage of this, and deliberately hit two services out of the court, giving a point to Tilden. American courtesy, as demonstrated by Tilden, proved the equal of Castilian, and Tilden purposely played the next two services into the gallery. The match ended with the spectators gasping. Two davs later,, at Indianapolis, Tilden defeated Alonso in the final of the men's ? singles in the American . clay court tennis championship, 2—6, B—6, 6—l, 7—5. ,
