CALIFORNIAN EARTHQUAKE
WIDE AREA SHAKEN. DAMAGE TO BUILDINGS. . Austtalian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 7.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, July 23. Two i| severe: earthquake • shocks startled Los Angeles early this morning. : They lasted six seconds. The shocks threw pedestrians off their feet, arid cracked walls. !;"■.'_ ..'■ ■~:-' !' Later reports show that the "whole of Southern California 'was shaken by a series .of shocks that commenced shortly before midnight and ended at one o'clock. Buildings were damaged in many towns.
